Install FTDI driver for USB-to-serial-port adapter or Arduino board

Some USB-to-serial port adapters and Arduino board (or its clones) with FTDI chips are not recognized by the operation system automatically.

For example when Arduino board is connected to the computer, menu Tools of the Arduino IDE has its Port menu item disabled – when the FTDI driver is not properly recognized.

This article shows how to install FTDI drivers.

There are two options how drivers can be installed

  • Download executable package which installs drivers automatically.
  • Download zip-archive with drivers to install them manually.

Install drivers with executable package

Download the executable installer from theĀ Virtual COM Port Drivers page of the site www.ftdichip.com

Run downloaded installer and proceed with the installation wizard.

If this method does not work – try to install drivers manually.

Download drivers in the zip-archive from theĀ Virtual COM Port Drivers page of the site www.ftdichip.com – select 32 or 64 bit version corresponding the Windows on the PC (there is a guide to determine the version of Windows).

Extract archive or install executable file to some folder.

Connect the USB-to-serial port adapter or Arduino board to the computer and open the Device Manager dialog, find the “Other Devices” item with “USB Serial Port” item marked as failed.

Windows 7: Click on the “Start” button, click with the right mouse button on the “Computer” item and select “Manage” menu item

Windows 8: Hit Win+E, select “This PC” and click on “Manage” button in the Windows Explorer ribbon

Windows 8: Hit Win+X and select “Device Manager” menu item

Windows command prompt: Hit Win+R and enter command

mmc compmgmt.msc

Select “Device Manager” option

Click with the right mouse button on the “USB Serial Port” and select “Upgrade Driver Software…” in the context menu.

Click on the option “Browse my computer for driver software” in the dialog “Update Driver Software”.

Click on the option “Let me pick from a list of devices on my computer”.

Select the option “Show All Devices” and proceed with the wizard.

Click on the button “Have Disk…” to select the installing driver.

Find the folder with drivers extracted from downloaded archive.

Select ftdibus.

Start installation procedure.

Select to install the “USB Serial Converter”. Checkbox “Show compatible hardware” allows to hide other options. Proceed with installation.

If there is no the checkbox “Show compatible hardware” – select “USB Serial Converter” in the list manually.

USB Serial Converter installed.

Now “USB Serial Converter” should be shown in the “Device Manager” within the list of “USB Controllers” (or “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”).

Click on the option “Browse my computer for driver software” in the dialog “Update Driver Software” and repeat the previous steps. This time select ftdiport.

Select to install the “USB Serial Port”. Checkbox “Show compatible hardware” allows to hide other options. Proceed with installation.

If there is no the checkbox “Show compatible hardware” – select “USB Serial Port” in the list manually.

USB Serial Port installed.

Now “USB Serial Port (COM#)” should be shown in the “Device Manager” within the list of “Ports (COM & LPT)”.

The port for the connected Arduino board should be available in the Arduino IDE.
